Healing from Intestinal Parasites such as Blastocystis hominis

Did you know that 80% of the population is said to carry an Intestinal Parasite and be unaware? Intestinal parasites are organisms that live and thrive in the human intestines. They can be acquired through ingestion of contaminated food, water (tank water), or surfaces, as well as through contact with infected individuals or animals. If you have been overseas recently, drunk from tank water, and are experiencing any of the symptoms as outlined below, there is a chance you could well have an intestinal parasite!

There are various types of intestinal parasites that can affect humans, including:

  1. Protozoa: These are single-celled organisms that can cause gastrointestinal infections. Common protozoan parasites include Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica, and Cryptosporidium.

  2. Helminths: These are worm-like parasites that can infect the intestines. Examples of helminthic parasites include roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides), hookworms (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus), whipworms (Trichuris trichiura), and tapeworms (Taenia species).

  3. Pinworms: Enterobius vermicularis is a common type of parasitic worm that causes pinworm infections. It is particularly common in children and can cause itching around the anus.

One parasites that is very commonly found when a stool test is conducted is Blastocystis hominis, which is a microscopic parasite that lives in the intestinal tract of humans and other animals (think cellular rather than a worm!) It is commonly found in developing countries, but it can also be found in developed countries, particularly seen in those that have been in contact with affected tank water or tropical areas.

Symptoms of a Parasite Infection

Symptoms of intestinal parasite infections can vary depending on the type of parasite and the severity of the infection. Common symptoms may include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Bloating and gas
  • Itching around the anus (common with pinworm infections)

Many people who are infected with parasites such as Blastocystis hominis may not experience any symptoms.

The symptoms of a parasite are similar to those of other gastrointestinal conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), so it can be difficult to diagnose infection based on symptoms alone. The leading way to test, is via a stool sample test through your GP or naturopath.

A Parasite Infection is typically treated with antibiotics or antiparasitic medications. Zeally Herbs have created a traditional cleanse, tested for its efficacy of treating and eradicating parasites. Sourced from nature with potent, traditionally used ingredients; its taking the power of plants to cleanse and eradicate, ultimately avoiding disrupting our important microbiome environment with harsh antibiotics.

Prevention of Blastocystis hominis Infection

There are a few steps you can take to reduce your risk of contracting Blastocystis hominis:

  • Practice good hygiene, such as washing your hands regularly and thoroughly.
  • Avoid drinking untreated water, particularly when traveling in developing countries.
  • Be wary of unfiltered tank water
  • Cook meat and poultry thoroughly to kill any potential parasites.
  • Avoid contact with faeces, particularly when changing diapers or caring for animals. Or just remember to wash your hands!
